Asian Games 2022 have been postponed until 2023. China will host all the sports events including esports next year.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), planned the 19th Asian Games for September 2022 in Hangzhou.
Chinese organisers had completed the venues and a quarantine plan. This plan was like that of the 2021 Winter Olympics.
Due to severe covid conditions in China, (OCA) has decided to postpone the event.
Covid Situations :
China has been dealing with another wave of Covid-19 which is a new variant – ‘Omicron’.
Shanghai, the world’s financial centre, went into a state of emergency in March. The city has been suffering a lockdown since then.
Restrictions continue to be in effect in large parts of the city. OCA can not risk the health of athletes, so they will host the event later. It will announce new dates for Asian Games soon.
Official Statement :
In a press release, Olympic Council said –
“The OCA today decided to postpone the 19th Asian Games, which were scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, from 10 to 25 September 2022.”
“HAGOC [The Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee] has been very well prepared to deliver the Games on time despite global challenges.
However, the above decision was taken by all the stakeholders after carefully considering the pandemic situation and the size of the Games.”
Asian Games 2022 :
In 2018, there was a successful demonstration event of esports. After that, esports was about to make its debut in Asian Games as a medal event.
Meanwhile, OCA announced 8 games as esports titles for this year –
- PUBG Mobile
- FIFA 22
- Street Fighter V
- DOTA 2
- League of Legends
- Dream Three Kingdom 2
- Arena of Valor
With this, the National teams will get more time to prepare for Asian Games. Hopefully the pandemic will be under control in 2023 and all these events will begin.
